That was the first year, 1938. General mobilization took place on August 26th 1939. In February – February 1939 – the physical examinations for the military were held. My husband also had to undergo the physical exam. On August 26th the general mobilization started. At midnight we were woken by the police. Conscription order: departure for Wörgl at 5 a.m.! Everyone born in 1908 was drafted. That's what the times were like. And then, the next day, certain horses were drafted, because the army needed horses too. Then the ground campaign started. It didn't last that long. But my husband was in the army for eight years. He spent two years as prisoner of war in Russia.
